From 12th to 17th April I was invited by the NGO Equipindia (who found me through my website/blog) to offer new product designs and train people with disabilities on their handicraft and embroidery project in Hubli, Karnataka. Time was short - but I was able to suggest a few new product designs and we revamped some exisiting styles - including bags, purses, picture frames, coasters and cushion covers. Women with disabilities who live in the hostel at the Equipindia centre, and also others who work from home in Hubli, are skilled in many types of embroidery and we were able to use this as a focal point for the products. I worked with staff at the centre and their tailors to create paper patterns and stitch finished products. I also left behind some design ideas for the staff to sample after my departure. I enjoyed excellent hospitality and was glad to see a different part of India to contrast to Delhi and the north.
