On 13th November 2010 the Swechha staff, some GTZ staff, and some interested local schoolchildren went on a Yamuna River Walk to witness the pollution firsthand. We stopped off at three different points along the river in the Delhi area - to compare the cleaner stretch of water which hasn't yet reached the city, and the filthy state of the water that flows out of the city - caused by poorly treated or untreated sewage and dumped rubbish. There are some small motorised boats for hire - made available for Hindus who wish to make offerings to the river on certain festival days. We took a short boat ride in the dirty water, up to a riverside crematorium, and were splashed by bags of rubbish being thrown down into the river from one of the bridges. Swechha regularly organises such river walks to raise awareness among Delhi's population on the state of the river - to encourage lobbying of the government and changes in individual practices.
