On Saturday 16th October 2010 I joined Swechha colleagues on a day out for children from disadvantaged communities around Delhi, organised by AIESEC. The event is called Balakalakar, and takes place every year. Around 1,000 children took part, with almost 70 from the Jagdamba camp community in which Swechha works. The day included a dance competition, a painting competition, and a health talk from a doctor. Our group of children were aged between 9 and 15, and were the most excited of them all. They were the first to answer questions during the health talk, the first to jump up onto the stage when given an opportunity to dance in front of the crowd, and they refused to sit down in rows on the floor when asked to wait - prefering to jump up and dance to the music playing! The boys soon got us to dance with them - which they greatly enjoyed! Four girls from our group performed a traditional Hindi dance they had been practising in our office for several weeks. Boxes containing a hamburger-style veg sandwich and a samosa each were handed out for lunch - however these were not to the taste of most of the kids! After more dancing the exhausted group took the yellow school buses home in the afternoon.
