One of Swechha’s projects is called Green The Gap – which focuses on recycling waste into high quality products, and falls under the sustainable development programme area.
Swechha has made a few videos highlighting the plight of ‘ragpickers’ in Delhi – men, women and children who spend their days searching for recyclable waste on rubbish heaps, which they then sell to intermediaries per kilo, who then sell to factories (see ‘Disposable’…http://vimeo.com/2482200). Green The Gap sources recyclable waste such as car tyres, food packaging, and leftover fabric rolls, and turns them into new bags, household items, purses etc. Sales are going well, through the facebook page, word-of-mouth, and a stall at a South Delhi shopping centre called Select Citywalk. The project operates in the gap between rich and poor, by bringing waste sorted by the poor, to sell to wealthier people in a new, air-conditioned mall.
We are hoping to develop this project through improving and enlarging the product range, and widening distribution channels.
