Fair trade day in Koussanar, 14th February 2009

On the 14th February 2009 a 'Fair Trade day' was organised in Koussanar, the village in eastern Senegal where the organic fair trade cotton is grown and processed by hand by the Yakaar Niani Wulli Federation. The main aim was to bring together all the actors in the chain for the first time, so that each person involved would understand the importance of his/her role in a larger context. It was also the opportunity to discuss how to overcome any difficulties and how to improve the quality of the finished textile products by improving communication among actors at different levels. The meeting was attended by cotton growers, spinners, weavers, an indigo dyer, tailors, supporting organisations, designers, and marketers.

The Senegalese fair trade initiative also includes projects in other sectors: artisans working with metal and recycled materials; food processing; and herbal medicine. Representatives from these other areas also came to Koussanar to share their experiences and build links.
